Direct to Consumer Advertising Research

Wellbeing Wellington and Waikato Psychiatry are keen to understand peoples’ views on Direct to Consumer Advertising (DCTA) and drug company corporate sponsorship. Along with the USA, New Zealand is one of only two developed countries that allow public advertising of prescription medicines on television, on the radio, and in magazines.

Opinions regarding DCTA vary a lot. Industry representatives (such as Medicines NZ) strongly support retaining DTCA, while some professional bodies (for example the NZ Medical Association, and the Colleges of General Practice and Psychiatry) are opposed and think it should be phased out.

We believe it is essential that people who are prescribed medications and use other pharmaceutical products are heard in this debate. We are undertaking research so we can gather as many peoples’ views as possible.
